A little time back Google announced it Linux based Mobile operating system called Android and application development environment. It is good to see real innovation companies throwing their weight behind Mobile segment (Apple and Google). With such interest from such companies, for sure, will reform the mobile industry irrevocably and how we use phone. I have heard testimonials from quite a few people about how Apple’s iPhone actually brings internet to your phone. Whereas Apple is closed platform, it is the probably the only company which successful clientele with closed platform. On the other hand highly IP protected, royalty driven Qualcomm CDMA technology is facing downturn and the trend will continue because other’s companies/innovators are locked out. The question is, what is a successful business & technology model? In my really really naïve opinion, when the technology is not well adopted then it is better to have a fully closed platform. But in time you would want to open the platform so that creative developers develop new applications for your device/software. If you lock them out then this creativity works the other way and goes to a different platform. When this happens, then the real path-breaking innovators are chasing the companies which have been able to tap into the global creativity gaia. For example, Apple had kept its software/application system closed and now it is master in most hardware devices but it is master in a few software and applications. Because of Apple’s closed system , and Microsoft’s developer friendliness & end-user centric-ness, the creativity gaia contributed more to Microsoft. And now, Apple is limited to play catch up game for a lot of software applications such as Office Suite, Games etc. In fact, Apple had initiated its own initiative for Office competitor but it realized that it is better to join Microsoft rather than fight it and since 2004 it has Microsoft Office for Mac.
It is good to see major innovation engines of the world jumping on the mobile bandwagon. At this point, there are companies at each extreme from closed platform to open platform. Who will win end up dominate the software side of mobile segment. Even more importantly, what would be the business model or why will/are company investing and what is ROI?
